Sumedha – Prajna Vikas Kendra, Neelavara
A School for Special Children

The Juvenile Jurisprudence Act of 2015 of the Government of India envisages that every child born in the  country has the right to live, to receive education and to socialize. This Act applies to all the children including the child with special physical and intellectual needs. In reality, the children with special physical and mental needs right from birth are a special responsibility of the society.

Every child born in the world is God’s creation. The service that we render to children, particularly in view of their special needs, the care, nurture and suitable education is the service  we render to the Almighty. Keeping this in mind His Holiness Sri Vishwa Prasanna Theertha Swamiji of Sri Pejawar Adhokshaja Matha, Udupi is working tirelessly to instill energy, enthusiasm and confidence among the specially-abled children.

In 2007, under aegis of the Vishwajaneena Trust founded by him, he established a school for the specially-abled children named “Sumedha – Prajna Vikas Kendra” to protect the constitutional rights of these children. He has committed himself to the development of mentally challenged children. Renowned psychiatrist Dr P V Bhandary of Udupi extended his support to bring such special children to the mainstream of the Society. Sumedha is a hope for the mentally challenged children by providing them free food and shelter along with appropriate education.

His Holiness Sri  Swamiji has shifted the school  to a new spacious, well-equipped building at Neelavar and since then it has been one of the model schools for the children with special abilities. At present 30 children are benefitting from the school. The organization is  carrying out the stupendous responsibility of picking up the children from their house, bringing them to the school, teaching them the required skills and dropping them back  home in the evening in the school bus.

Owing to lack of awareness many parents  of the such  children with special needs are not able to provide suitable educational opportunities. In view of this His Holiness Sri Swamiji took up the cause of such children, started identifying them and inviting them to Sumedha to instill skill and confidence in them. The staff of the institution are committed to rendering service with patience and empathy under the noble guidance of His Holiness Sri Swamiji.

Seeing the humanitarian activities of this Institution, Rotary Udupi, with the support of the Global Grant of the Rotary Foundation, has provided school buses, physiotherapy equipment, Furniture, computers and the other required equipment so as to fulfill the vision  and mission of His Holiness Sri Swamiji to the noble social cause of nurturing such children with special needs.
